Testing 1-2-3. Anybody out there? Anybody? Is this thing on? (taps the mike).

We’re s’posed to keep this kinda light, right?

My story begins when, as a young child, I walked 10 miles through the snow to school every day. No wait, that’s not right, must’ve been somebody else….

After my stint as a travelling vacuum cleaner salesman in Topeka, Kansas, I…..no, no, that wasn’t me either.

I guess my life really began when I walked through the doors of the old Ingles building in L’ville sometime in 2000 or so. Although it took me awhile to come around I got on board and gave my life to Jesus on Easter Sunday, 2001. Aint never been the same after that. God done took care of me ever since, and the blessings keep on coming.

Got a wonderful wife, Jan, and our dating and marriage had its roots in God and C3. 40+ years on my own and no luck, God took over and that was that. Been not quite 5 years now. Reckon you could say I married up. I’m the fat, bald guy you see at the mall (which I avoid like the plague, BTW) with the gorgeous woman. That would be Jan. I used to see that kind of thing and wonder how it happened, how that guy got so lucky. Now I’m that guy!!! You could definitely say I out-punted my coverage. So if you’re still looking, if it could happen to me….

She calls me a geek but that’s really not me (just the guys I work with). I’ve been in technology, mainly networking systems and telecommunications, with Gwinnett County Schools for 26+ years now. When I started our mainframe had, I think about 13 gb of storage and it took up a whole room. Now you can put more than that on a flash drive for 20 buck$ and stick it in your shirt pocket. I think that makes me a dinosaur? I’m highly choleric at work and just the opposite (phlegomania) at home. I do keep a little of both in each spot but you wont find much sanguine or melancholy in me. Those don’t come natural so I have to remember work at it – most times don’t work hard enough. Need to try to keep rounded.

I like to read a lot, mostly fiction. Not much on self-help or educational stuff (for everything I learn it now seems I forget something else). I like Stephen Hunter; he has very colorful characters and reflects duty and honor in his books. Not much on TV these days unless it’s sports. I like NASCAR but haven’t watched too much this year. I’m a Jr. fan and liked his daddy before that. My favorite sport without question is college football and I’ve seen a game or two (or 175) up ‘Tween the Hedges’. Haven’t missed a home game since 1983. You could say I’m a Dawg thru & thru (but I do have a few Gators I call friends). Even got an ol’ hound dawg (well, he’s really still a pup) named Dooley but he’s not named for Vince, rather after a bootlegger from a bluegrass song on the old Andy Griffith show. (He’s a mess, too). Jan and I both like gardening and we’ve got about 20 Japanese Maples in our new home in Dacula, about 14 of those in the ground (thanks, Dave). Beautiful trees. About 5 of those we grew from seed. I like to think I can smoke up some pretty mean ribs every now and then, too. That’s ‘bout the only thing I can cook, though (besides beans and franks, a true culinary delight). Also like a nice glass of wine (not with beans and franks), and finding new ones that are really good but affordable, too.

Some of these things were before I found God, some after. Some things I kept, others were (thankfully) pruned. And the pruning continues still. It’s true that when God takes away he replaces with something better. I was scared when I first got saved because I thought I had to be perfect. I didn’t have a clue that I couldn’t be even if I tried – and that’s what the Holy Spirit was for – to help us, among other things. Before C3, I never knew God was real – tangibly real - and that He was about Love, and Liberty, and Freedom – and not about judgment which is so often associated with church, especially in the south. I think our wonderful pastors and leaders do a great job of getting that across to everyone, and that’s a big reason why so many young folks are in C3. And that there’s still room for an old goat like me!!! : D

(Man alive, I got to writing and couldn’t shut up! Sorry ‘bout that! You still reading this? Go on and get on with your life!)

Ok, this misbehavior by the Dog players is getting a little ridiculous. I hope it ends soon. Richt is certainly taking stearn measures.

Hello Realmen -- wanted to shoot a quick msg to make you aware of an opportunity where YOU can help a C3 single mother. She has recently moved into a Townhouse that requires some interior painting. We need 10-15 men this Saturday, Aug 9th, from 8am-12pm (donuts in morning & pizza for lunch WILL BE PROVIDED). The townhome is close to the the church...so we'll meet at 7:55am and head out to her house. If you would like to help, please contact Brian Lenox at 404-277-8174 or Greg Osegge at 678-409-1444 - they are spear-heading the effort -- you guys are awesome!!! thx Eric Tymchuk

Howdy Rick,
The photo is not me...but of a Marine following a bit of fighting in Iraq. Thought I'd put that up as a statement to reflect the world situation. I don't know if you've heard but I joined the National Guard last November. Today I'm at Fort Bragg for annual training and will be here for almost two weeks. Currently my unit is scheduled for mobilization next May so I'm trying to get as much training in as possible. Miss seeing you and Jan as much and hope you all are doing well.
