Charleston 08

We took our annual history trip to Charleston, SC in April. Each year we plan one major trip to someplace historic. Last year, our first, was to Gettysburg, PA.

This year we visited where it all began (Civil War) - Fort Sumter and all of the sites around it. We spent the good part of a day at Patriots Point roaming the big ships of WW-II, viewed a recreation of a Vietnam era Naval Support Base and got to see the actual CSA Hunley.

In between all of this was the madness a bunch of guys travelling together can endure. Great food, great sites and even more - great friendship.

When we are not travelling to far places, we take short trips to various historic sites. One day trips ending with a great meal. If you are interested, come join us. Talk to Mark Creath, Dave Spell, Chuck Damren, Nelson Markham, Mario Giovanni, Joe Primm, Mark Ellis and others that join us from time to time.

Hey all, pretty quiet around here lately. How is everyone? I have another quiz for you...
1. True or False. There was only one Japanese air raid on the Hawaiian Islands in WWII.
2. True of False. The 100 years war was 110 years long.
3. Who fired the first shots of the Civil War?

Hey Joe/Mark...You can count me and my father-in-law in on the trip to Columbus, GA. Are you planning a day trip, or overnighter?

Okay - so I start a group and don't participate nearly enough. Busy as we have all been, Mark and I want to get back into this soon. We are considering a July 5th trip to Columbus, GA but I'm wondering if there will enough folks around. We also have an idea given by Jeff Hill to go to the Museum over at the airbase in Marietta. So good times, we'll kick it off again and we also need ideas for movie nights and people to offer up their home.

Movie nights are about having a 'guy' movie, a few beverages and pizza. Its a great time, its a great way to just hang out and unwind.

1. The invasion of Guadacanal by the 1st Marine Divsion
2. A seaborne landing at Nassua during the revolutionary war to gather arms and munitions for the revolution (the British were so surprised no shots were fired during the action)\
3. Army Engineer Capt. Mullan created a road from the Tri-Cities area of Washington State to Montana. This road allowed for natural resources to be transported to the coast and supplies inland. They passed 3-4 major mountain passes, several river crossings, and other obstacles to complete this event.

1. Was it something in the Phillipines?
2. Did we attack a Pirate stronghold in the Carribean Sea?
3. Not sure of this one!

Mark,

Close on all three.

1. The sub sinking was part of the defensive action for Pearl Harbor, so it counts more towards the first shots fired by Americans. Clue 1st Marine Division

2. Close again, that was actually a land based assault over several hundred miles of desert. Think closer to home where we see hurricanes every year.

3. That is a great engineering feat, but it did not so much open the inland northwest as connect AK to the lower 48. Another clue on this one is that it opened what is called the inland NorthWest in the 1900's.
